Storage sells – and satisfies!

If you are building a new home (or hope to in the future), make the most of your space and plan for a lot of storage. In a previous home, a friend and I brainstormed and created a multiple shelf plan for nearly every closet in the home. All of that storage space was glorious!

A basic rod and shelf wastes so much precious space. Shelving doesn’t need to be expensive – painted wood or coated metal works fine, and it’s not complicated to install.

Dream of that “ultimate closet space” – and then, whether remodeling or building, make plans to see it come true! Browse for ideas in books, online, and in homes you observe. Ask your friends what they do and don’t like about the storage in their own closets. Pretty soon, you’ll have a clearer vision of what kind of storage would suit your fancy!

Imagine a permanent home for your books, purses, sweaters, photos, office supplies, pantry necessities…. Storage is a green action because it will save you energy and conserve your resources – you won’t believe how much time you’ll save once you have “a place for everything and everything in its place”. And time is money, right?

Here’s a good way to get started: Jot down what bothers you about each room in your abode. Then dream through every room in your home, and what it would take to get the current inventory off the floor and out of sight. Simply taking this small action can get your creative juices flowing and help you breathe easier – imagine all of that new-found air space!

And remember- storage is also a great selling point, should you move from your current home. People dream of moving and tell themselves that they will “finally get organized” - and your well-thought-out storage closets will help them believe it is finally possible!

Energy $aving Tip of the Month

Many people think of insulation as a “winter kind of thing” - extra insulation will keep you warmer in winter. While this is true, did you also know that insulation will keep you cooler in the summer? It’s never the “wrong” time of year to have an insulation audit done. Many locations have companies (perhaps your local power company) that can do an energy audit. In my area, a home inspector can perform this valuable service and create a prioritized list of action steps to reduce energy usage in the home.

One relative newcomer on the insulation scene is denim, or blue jean insulation. It is quite popular because it has no formaldehyde or toxic chemicals, and it is ideal for do-it-yourselfers.

Green Product Review of the Month

Have you heard the latest about geothermal energy?

Geothermal energy is “green” in the truest sense, because it meets all of the criteria for a green system. It is energy efficient, resource conserving, and non toxic!

Geothermal energy is taken from the ground through a piping system. Several feet below the surface of the ground, the earth maintains a consistent temperature. Tapping into this moderate temperature means less heating and cooling bills for you, the homeowner. In fact, geothermal systems can handle 80-100% of the design heating load in a new or existing home! Some folks have even had the pleasure of selling their excess electricity back to the power company!

It won’t cost anything but a bit of your time to research – and just imagine a future without ever-skyrocketing electric bills each month!

Geothermal energy can make this green dream a reality.
