Crawl Space Insulation

The Basics of Crawl Space Insulation

The battle to improve temperature control in houses as efficiently as possible, and to stabilize heat and cold, is an ongoing challenge.

Whether dealing with an old house or a new one, you may choose to improve energy efficiency in as many ways as possible. One of the best is to improve your crawl space insulation.

Heat Rises . . . . And Falls!

Many people think immediately of attic insulation when they think of home insulation. The push to improve home insulation over the past thirty years has led to a high proportion of attics being well insulated with a variety of modern materials, from fiberglass to expanding foam insulation.

The effort to remove asbestos from older houses has also led to an increasing awareness that insulation such as Styrofoam insulation, rigid foam, and expanding foam, would be wise substitutes for the missing material.

Crawl spaces, however, are often ignored.

Because heat rises, there is a tendency to worry more about heat lost through the roof, attic and walls than through the flooring.

There is considerable heat loss from the crawl space too, however, and it’s a smart idea to proceed with crawl space insulation plans in an effort to complete your home heating projects.

Insulating A Crawl Space

The choices for crawl space conditioning are varied, but perhaps the easiest, most versatile and most useful is expanding foam insulation. This material is created when two chemically interactive materials are sprayed onto the open face of a crawl space.

The film adheres and expands rapidly, then sets up within five minutes forming a thick air and water block. The foam fills cracks and crevices, and while it can be difficult to manage if a perfect surface is desired, in the context of a crawl space, small amounts of bulging or gloppy foam are of no matter whatsoever.

The expanding foam insulation is available to the home project worker for a reasonable price. The materials are proving to be safe and easily used. The outcome is superb.

By upgrading the insulation in your home, you ensure your ability to efficiently:

  • Control fuel use
  • Maintain a stable temperature in both winter and summer
  • Ensure cool spaces in the heat
  • Ensure warmth in the colder months.
Your effort will reward you many times over.

Steps To Improving Crawl Spaces

Before starting a crawl space insulation project:

* Take the time to review methods and techniques between varying materials.

* Price the labor of contractors: while you can do your own insulation work safely, in some instances, professionals are inexpensive enough to make DYI projects desirable only if you want to practice and learn.

* Compare materials for insulation and determine the form best suited to your particular challenges. Then proceed with confidence.
