House Siding:
Materials and Options

There are so many options when it comes to house siding!

While we appreciate the freedom of choice, there is such a vast array of products that it can become a bit overwhelming to sift through the selection. Following are your options in summary form.

Most popular home siding materials:

  • Vinyl Siding
Economical and low maintenance, vinyl siding has become quite popular especially in the U.S. Newer types include solid core vinyl siding and insulated foam siding. More info on vinyl siding styles here.

  • Masonry Siding
This includes brick and stone, and may also be used to mean cement and stucco. Synthetic masonry is also becoming more popular - cultured stone is one example. More on masonry siding here.

  • Fiber Cement Siding
One of the most popular brands of cement siding is Hardieplank Siding, made popular by James Hardie. Click here for more on hardiplank siding.

  • Stucco Siding
Made from naturally occurring substances, stucco siding is popular especially in hotter climates.

  • Wood Siding
This may be called clapboard siding, cedar siding, or wood shakes. More on wood siding here...

  • Metal Siding
This category includes steel and aluminum metal products. More about metal siding here.

  • Engineered Wood Siding
A relative newcomer on the scene, this product will likely become more popular as it proves itself to be a reliable option.

Keep in mind that some subdivisions require
certain types of home siding materials to be
used in order to approve of your building plan.
(See Covenants and Restrictions page for more info about this issue).

Take some time to learn the pros and cons of each type of siding material. Then with your budget in hand, you can make an informed decision.
